Feeling Overwhelmed

Overwhelm does not only arrive when life is difficult. Sometimes it just shows up when life is full. A busy work season, family responsibilities, social plans, good news, change, opportunity, or even moments we have been hoping for can still leave us feeling like we have too much to hold. It can be confusing to feel overwhelmed when things are “good,” but the body does not always separate good stress from hard stress. Sometimes the cup is simply too full.

When we are overwhelmed, we may try to push harder, organize better, move faster, or tell ourselves we should be able to manage. But overwhelm can often be more about capacity. Something inside us is asking for space. It may be asking us to notice what we are carrying, what we have taken on automatically, and where we may need support. This can become an important place to slow down and ask: what is filling my cup, and what would it mean to let even a little bit of it be held differently?

A useful self-check might be: Is my cup full because I have been carrying too much without enough room to breathe? This question does not solve everything, but it can soften the pressure to immediately fix, perform, or explain. It may help us notice whether we need rest, clearer boundaries, help from someone else, or simply a quiet moment to come back to ourselves.

Sometimes the first step is not to empty the whole cup. It may be enough to make a little room. A breath. A pause. A conversation. A small ask for help. Reaching out to others can offer a space to look at what has been filling up inside, how you respond when life feels like too much, and what might help you feel less alone in carrying it.
